Priest Leveling Guide - Everything You Need to Know About Leveling a Priest in WoW

So you've decided to roll up a Priest for your next World of Warcraft character? Priests are well-known as a constant middle-of-the-road class; a priest is as good as the player behind it, like any class...but for a priest this is truer than it is for any other class but Mage. It can be a bit overwhelming, starting a priest and figuring out which of your many, many skills you should use, but don't worry. This Priest Leveling Guide will tell you everything you need to do to make it from one to eighty in style.

There are two worthwhile specs to consider while leveling. Now, the most commonly suggested one for leveling is a Shadow spec. Shadow is the de-facto DPS spec at endgame, and it often seems the best option for leveling as well. But here's the thing; Shadow takes too long to get it's DPS going. When leveling, you are mowing down mobs in under 10 seconds...a lot of your DoTs won't even finish, meaning you wasted mana and damage. That is why, at least until level 60, where Dispersion can give you near-infinite mana, this priest leveling guide suggests that you go with a Smite spec.
There are two reasons for this; Holy has strong single target DPS, and your main damage spell will ignore spell resistance, which can be a real pain for casters until you get into TBC content, where less enemies have resistance. Personally, I use this spec and go all the way to 80 with Smite:
We actually start in Shadow, with
Spirit Tap 3/3
then go to Holy for
Holy Spec 5/5
Divine Fury 5/5
Desperate Prayer 1/1
Spell Warding 4/5 (You can put these in something else if you like)
Searing Light 2/2
Holy Reach 2/2
Spell Warding 5/5 (Again, this point can go somewhere else if you want)
Spiritual Guidance 5/5
Surge of Light 2/2
at this point (level 36), start putting points in Discipline.
Twin Disciplines 5/5
Improved Inner Fire 3/3
Improved PW: Fortitude 2/2
Meditation 3/3
Inner Focus 1/1
Improved PW: Shield 3/3
Mental Agility 3/3
Reflective Shield 2/2
Soul Warding 1/1
Mental Strength 2/5
Enlightenment 3/3
Focused Power 2/2
Focused Will 3/3
Mental Strength 4/5
Rapture 3/3
Mental Strength 5/5
Power Infusion 1/1
Pain Suppression 1/1
This is the spec this Priest Leveling Guide will assume. This spec has the additional benefit of being very easy to play.

Other quick tips: Always carry the highest level drink you can carry. You can heal, so you don't have to carry Food if you don't want to.
Keep your gear upgraded. If you send everything to an alt and Auction it, you can afford to keep top-end gear on your character. For a priest, you want Hit Rating, Spell Damage, and Spirit. Mostly you'll be getting Spirit at low levels.

For the first 5 levels or so, you should just spam Smite. Once you hit level 5, make sure to get a wand from the Auction House, and use that. For a while, it will do better DPS than your other attacks, so just save your mana for healing yourself
Once you get Mind Blast, you should open with on a mob at max range with Smite, then immediately Mind Blast, then spam more Smites. Once the enemy reaches you, wand it to death. If you find this is taking too long, Power Word: Shield yourself before the enemy reaches you, and continue to spam Smite. This will require much more frequent drinking, though.
At level 20, you get the awesome spell Holy Fire. Once you do, continue as before, but cast Holy Fire before Mind Blast. If you are killing enemies quickly and easily, feel free to drop Mind Blast from your rotation to save mana.

This will be the way you will level, more or less, all the way to 80. You will get things like Surge of Light and Inner Focus from talents, but these are fairly straightforward buffs, and don't change how you play; you'll just occasionally get a free spell, meaning less drink time. I don't think this priest leveling guide needs to explain that you should use Inner Focus on your most expensive damage spell as often as possible, etc, etc.

Once you have Reflective Shield, it can be beneficial to keep PW:S on when being hit, if you can spare the mana.

There you go; this Priest Leveling Guide has given you the information and tools you need to go from one to eighty with confidence and ease.

One last note: To those of you don't have a questing guide yet, they can improve leveling time by a lot. I recommend checking out my comparison review of the top guides, by clicking here
